WORKING HARD ON FITNESS

The former goalkeeper of Sunderland, Craig Gordon, has said that he is working very hard on his fitness these days and he would get 100% fit towards the end of this year. Gordon is a free agent at the moment. His contract with Sunderland had expired at the end of the last season and the club didn’t extend his contract. During the pre season transfer window, Gordon was suffering from knee injury and that’s why he wasn’t able to sign for any new club.

Gordon had joined Sunderland in August 2007 on a contract of five years. Sunderland had bought him from Hearts after paying a big transfer fee of 9 million pounds. Gordon made his debut for the Black Cats in a Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur and impressed everyone with his performance in the very first match.  He made a couple of fantastic saves in that match and helped Sunderland win that match by 1-0. But, unfortunately, Gordon got injured in the middle of the season and was ruled out of the team for the rest of the season.

He made a comeback in the next season, but, he broke his arm while playing in a match against the Spurs. Due to that injury, he had to remain out of the team for three months.

Gordon kept struggling with injuries in the further seasons as well. In 2010, he again injured his arm and then, in April 2011, he went through knee surgery due to which he had to remain out of action for eight months.

When asked about his fitness and future plans, Gordon said, “It would take me a bit more time to regain complete fitness, but, I think I would get fully fit towards the end of this year.”

“Fitness is the priority for me at the moment. Once I get 100% fit, then, I would start searching a new club.”

GORDON KEEN ON ITALY

The former Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon is currently in talks with the Italian club Udinese over a potential move to the Italian Serie A. The Scotland international has been without a club for the last couple of months after not being offered a new contract by Sunderland.

Craig Gordon was expected to be one of the next big things from Scotland after he was signed by the former Sunderland manager Roy Keane for a British transfer record fee for the goalkeeper at £ 9 million. However, he has suffered a number of injury problems the last few seasons, which have raised a lot of questions over his future.

The current Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill decided not to extend the contract of the 30-year-old Scotland international, who needs regular playing time in order to get back to his best. He has been looking for a new club to move prior to the start of the new season.

The agent of the goalkeeper has confirmed that his client is currently negotiating a deal with the Italian club Udinese and he expects a good decision to come about in the next couple of days, though there have been rumours he would be appearing in an arsenal t-shirt next season.

Craig Gordon has been linked with a return to Scotland, but it seems that he is looking for an international club.

Meanwhile, the former Sunderland midfielder Steed Malbranque is about to come back from his retirement with the French club Lyon. “It is very clear with Steed. Olympique Lyon want to know where he is to see if there is an opportunity. For now we’re at the stage of observation – we’ll see if it goes well. Steed is a player that we know – he has a lot of maturity and kept his qualities. Then again, he needs to regain his rhythm after a season without playing,” said the Lyon manager.

NOT SIGNED YET

The goal keeper of the Scotland football team, Craig Gordon, hasn’t signed a contract of three years that has been offered to him by Celtic. The Scottish player has been playing for Sunderland since 2007. Sunderland had given him a contract of 9 million pounds in 2007, which was a record. But, he was freed by Sunderland earlier this year and he is not a contracted player at the moment.

In the meantime, Gordon is practicing with his old team, Hearts. Gordon has been struggling a lot with the injuries in the last few years. In the five years that he spent with Sunderland, he used to get injured time and time again. He had to miss a lot of Sunderland matches due to that. Two years back, he suffered a serious knee injury. Due to that injury, he had to remain out of the game for a few months. He was not able to play in a large number of matches in the 2008-09 season. In the next season, he again injured himself by colliding with the English footballer, Jermain Defo. Due to that collision, his arm got broken. He had to go through surgery and he sat out of the team for quite sometime. After recovering from that, he started practicing, but, he injured his arm again while practicing. Last year, he again discovered his knee injury. In the 2011-12 season, he played in only one match for Sunderland.

Gordon is considered as one of the best goal keepers in the world. On being asked about practicing with his old club hearts, Gordon said that he is quite happy and obliged that his old club has given him the facilities of training. As per Gordon, he is looking for opportunities in the premiere league as well as overseas. He has kept his options open.

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has said that the friendly match against the United States of America is a great opportunity for him to find a new club.

The goalkeeper was recently released by his club Sunderland after he failed to impress manager Martin O’Neill with his fitness in the final few matches of the campaign. The goalkeeper has been struggling with a lot of injuries in the last few seasons. Despite being the British record transfer signing for a goalkeeper at £ 9 million, Sunderland have decided to not extend his contract. Gordon is now searching for a new club in the Premier league or back in Scotland.

Craig Gordon’s last appearance for the national team came in 2010 when he kept a clean sheet in the 3-0 win over Faroe Islands. Injuries and competition for places have meant that he will be returning back to international fold after a gap of more than two years. Gordon, though, sees this as a perfect opportunity to impress the scouts. This would in turn helped him get a new club before the start of the new season. The former Hearts goalkeeper came to Sunderland for fee of £ 9 million back in 2007.

“I’m looking forward to it. Having not played a great deal of football this season, it’s a chance to finish the season by showing people that I’m ready to play and hopefully I’ll get some time on the park out here. I think everyone is aware of my contract situation with Sunderland so it’s quite an important trip for me to show anybody who is watching that I’m ready to play,” said Craig Gordon ahead of the friendly match with USA on Saturday. Scotland have been preparing for their World Cup qualifiers by conducting a training camp in the USA.
